CHURCH LATIN

In 1912, Pope Pius X wanted to create a uniform pronunciation of Latin, and so insisted that the clergy everywhere should adopt what was then the Italian pronunciation. Hence ‘Yaysoos’, ‘bone-us’ and ‘chaylum’ for Jesus, bonus and caelum. The pronunciation of the Latin used by the Church during the twentieth century has no foundation earlier than this point.
