The Consolation of
Philosophy
Latin and
English dialogues
Latin only dialogues
Boethius wrote his
Consolation of
Philosophy in the prison
where he died in the early 6th century AD. In this piece the muses
Philosophy
and
Fortune visit him on the point of death. Boethius tries to adhere to
Philosophy's teaching on the status of the soul, the meaning of
goodness and
his own predicament - in her view nowhere near as bad as it may appear
- while
Fortune lurks menacingly with her more short-lived distractions.
