Saying hello in Italy

Italian life is founded on strong family values. When you meet Italians, they will want to know about your family life, and they will share with you theirs. Families run businesses at all levels of commerce in Italy, from small enterprises to large corporations.

If you are meeting someone for the first time you would use the polite form – Signor, Signora, Signorina (younger female). Friends will usually greet each other with two kisses.

Italians like formal titles to describe someone’s job. When they address each other professionally they make use of titles such as Dottore or Dottoressa (doctor), Ingegnere (engineer), Avvocato (lawyer), Professore or Professoressa (teacher).
